Day 1: 365 Days of Creativity & Inspiration

Day 1 of my 365 day challenge began as a bit of a surprise. I had creative cold feet! I decided I’d make a new piece of jewelry, since my etsy shop is getting low, I have a show coming up, and also a photo shoot at the end of February.

So I sat in front of my bust, surrounded by all my supplies and tools, ready and excited to begin this new project.

And sat. And sat. I drew a complete blank.

Now, I’ve heard so many artists and creatives comment that “you can’t force it”. You can’t make yourself be creative, and if you do, the result will be forced and less than stellar.

I disagree. I think it is imperative to work through burnout, nerves, confusion, and frustration. If you push yourself beyond your creative boundaries, you might just find a pocket of inspiration you never knew you had. In addition, if your effort turns out to be awful, forced, or just plain doesn’t work out – who cares? Who is it going to hurt? Simply take it apart and begin fresh! There (hopefully) isn’t anyone standing over your shoulder, insisting that every piece of work you do be perfect. Every mistake is a learning opportunity at the very least.

In any case, after I settled down a bit, had some coffee, and got down to business, this is what I came up with. Day 1: COMPLETE!

Intro: 365 Days of Creativity and Creation

As I was doing some random surfing, I came across this website: Make Something 365. It’s simple – make something every day. What could be better? Not only does it keep the creative juices flowing, it is a tangible commitment to take time out of my day to just create, to make sure my inspiration doesn’t stagnate, and to just take a break from everyday life.

So here goes, my commitment is to create something every day for a full year. My first instinct was to make all sorts of rules as to what counted as “something” – would logos count? Would projects I did for “work” count? What if I made ten things one day, and nothing the next? Would I have to blog about it every day?

My mind was dragged right back into the “corporate” mentality of imposing rules and regulations on everything, as if strict structure is imperative to making something worth doing. Kind of takes the fun out of things, doesn’t it?

So, bottom line, there’s no rules. I’m going to make SOMETHING every day – logos, jewelry, a homecooked meal, a website, a doodle in a notebook. I’ll post the results up on this blog, to track my progress, and hopefully inspire others to explore their creativity in the same way.
